Obituary – Horace Gamble

 1922-2021

Horace Gamble passed away peacefully on 7th February 2021 at the grand age of 98.  Horace is well known in Leicestershire and the East Midlands as the founder of the Leicester Railway Society in 1939 and was an honorary Vice President for the final years of his life.

As a boy in the 1930's, Horace discovered the joy of watching trains from the north end of platforms 3 & 4 at Leicester Midland station and it was at this time that he met up with others who shared the same passion and so, at the instigation of Horace, these young men formed the Leicester Railway Society in May of 1939.

A keen photographer, Horace took his first railway photograph in 1938 on a borrowed camera, but went on to own a Zeiss 'Nettar' folding camera on which he recorded every aspect of our railways all over the UK and was still taking modern images on a digital pocket camera in 2019!

A local historian of some note, he produced articles for magazines and was a regular contributor to the 'Mr Leicester' page of the 'Leicester Mercury'.  As an author, Horace will be remembered for his unique book 'Railways Around Leicester' published in 1989 which was lavishly illustrated with his own photographs.

Other self taught skills included poetry and art.  His watercolours of railway subjects was extensive and a good example of his work can be seen displayed in the 'Butler Henderson' refreshment room at Quorn & Woodhouse station, which is very appropriate as it was Horace who was invited by the LRS to cut the first turf for the construction of this building.

Horace leaves a daughter, son, grandchildren and great grandchildren who, along with the many railway friends, will greatly miss his wit and wisdom on all things.
